Sri Aman Benak Town

Sri Aman Earns its Benak Town Title

Sri Aman's recently held its trademark Benak Festival on 28th April to 2nd May 2010. The height of the benak or tidal bore was at its highest of about two metres plus during the high tide (King Tide 5.5 metres to 6.2 meters between 25 April and 2 May 2010). The event was made more significant with the completion of the Benak Panaroma Park which is connected by a walk path to the Batang Lupar Riverine Park. The yet to be developed Fort Alice stands in the middle.  For the convenience of Nadai Nama Nama readers I will again let the picture do the talking on how successful the event has been.

The crowd had gathered as early as 6:00 pm on 1 May 2010, waiting patiently for the benak to arrive

As the benak made its way towards Sri Aman town, so did the people from all over Sarawak and those outside the State

Sarawakians, young and old from various communities waited patiently - you do not get this kind of crowd to witness a local soccer match at the State Stadium. The benak was another form of attraction.

From the Benak Panorama Park and up to Fort Alice everyone had a great time enjoying the fantastic view of the Batang Lupar

The Benak Panorama Park was connected to the Batang Lupar Riverine Park via this walk path and even that was full and I was unable to pass through the crowd along the almost 400 metres stretch of the area

As the benak almost reach Sri Aman town, the crowd grew larger and larger

When the waves came everyone picked up their cameras and camera phones to record this spectacular scene. Notice how those at the mini plank walk in the middle trying to escape the benak waves

The benak hits the river banks with grace and everyone rose up to capture this memorable scene.

The benak has lifted Sri Aman's portfolio as the Benak Town with the completion of this beautiful infrastructure which allows people to enjoy the natural event. Where else if not in Sri Aman town? Seeing it in pictures is a different feeling altogether. So when the next King Tide comes and you have not seen this benak which is Sri Aman's best secret, do drop by. Cheers.
