Election 2006:Nomination Day

Sarawak Ninth State Election 2006: Nomination Day

Its crunch time for all aspiring Yang Berhormats wannabes, be they are contesting under the Barisan Nasional flag, Barisan Bersatu flag or standing as independents. Elections are not fun - for those of us on duty that is. So that is where most of my time went these past few days. Right after the naming of the Barisan Nasional Candidates and the launch of the State Barisan Nasional Manifesto, there were too many datas and news coming in for the whole 71 constituencies. One also should not forget the Coffee Shop Talks, Conspiracy Theories and Analysis, some positive, some negative, some a bit over emotional. But this is a once in a Five Year event so maybe some people feel its worth it. I would not want to blog that as most of it are just part of the spices of the Election - otherwise we would be talking about the upcoming World Cup.

Anyway the Operation Rooms on our side has started its activity. Basically here we assist to monitor matters related to the Elections.

Operations Room Personnel All set to roll

The view from the Operations Room relaxes the mind

The Candidates Line Up are (the names are constantly updated - spelling and name - not finalised as of 2:55 pm 9 May 2006). According to reports Barisan fielded candidates for all 71 state seats at stake.

Seat allocations for BN Parties are:

35 for Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) – previously 30
19 for Sarawak United Peoples' party (SUPP) – previously 17
9 for Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) – previously 6; and
8 for Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) – previously 7.

The other Parties contesting are:

Sarawak National Party incl MDC (SNAP):29 candidates
Parti Keadilan Rakyat:25
DAP:12
PAS: 1.

20 independents will also be contesting in 16 seats. Note:It would be interesting to note the following seats N.43 Ngemah and N.57 Belaga - as the incumbents who have been dropped that is Gabriel Adit of Ngemah and Stanley Ajang of Belaga are contesting as Independents) . N.40 Meradong sees a former SUPP private secretary to YB Law Hieng Ding, Federick Wong contesting as Independent (interesting to note that YB Law Hieng Ding himself will be heading the SUPP N.40 Ops Room). Some BN incumbents have a reason to be worried because the number of voters who turn up for Independent candidates are more than the BN Supporters.

5 Corner Contest:1 (N.40 Meradong)
4 Corner Contest:1 (N.66 Marudi)
3 Corner Contest: 13
One to One: 54
Uncontested: 2 (N37 Daro and N.50 Dalat after nominations closed)

There are nine new state constituencies namely N.1 Opar and N. 12 Kota Sentosa (Kuching Division), N.23 Lingga (Sri Aman), N.25 Balai Ringin (Serian), N.32 Bukit Saban (Betong), N.37 Daro, (Mukah) N.61 Bekenu and N.64 Pujut (Miri) and N.69 Batu Danau (Limbang).

The estimated population for Sarawak in 2006 is 2.5 Million. Total number of voters in Sarawak according to the gazetted on March 16, 2006 is 892,537. (This is a 9.2% increase from 817,460 eligible voters in 1996).

(List has been updated according to Bernama's list as at 4 a.m 10 May 2006. However spelling errors may differ as I am also referring to other lists submitted by the other Operation Rooms)

It does seem that the contest this time around will be quite tough for some of the Barisan Nasional candidates. Some incumbents may breeze through as they feel riding on the Barisan Nasonal dacing symbol is safe. The most important thing is how will the voters pick their candidates? It is my hope that money politics will not be that serious. I will go to vote earlier as a postal voter for N.54 Pelagus. This is due to the fact that I will be working as a Presiding Officer at N.9 Padungan on Polling Day and thus I am eligible to be a postal voter as I cannot return to Pelagus to cast my vote. As a voter I have to make my decision by 17th May 2006. The candidates line up in Pelagus also looks delicous at the moment. So far I have not made my decision yet - when the day comes i will exercise my right - bearing in mind that "Undi Itu Rahsia". To all eligible voters in Sarawak, exercise your rights wisely :). Good Luck to all candidates as we go through another round of democracy.
