The Borneo Fashion Week 2018 event kicked off with a Gala Dinner at Pullman Hotel Kuching. I have to admit this would be my first experience attending a fashion show. The nearest I get to one would be those organised at shopping malls. At that time you would not be ready with your camera equipment and the set up is different than the dedicated event like this one. Its a pretty good exercise as I had to really crunch and adapt with the required settings for my camera. The way the lights technicians play around with the lighting equipment and display screens during the show effects, makes it necessary to go off auto mode. This is because the camera tends to get confused by the different intensity of lights surrounding the stage. And of course I am not using any Artificial Intelligent (AI) fitted equipment so it will have to be manual and brain matter all the way.
Anyway its lesson learnt well. No tips I can share as I am a beginner with this kind of event. Just sharing the moments that I find worth sharing in this humble blog with my random thoughts. The other collection of photos will be put in my Facebook Page, all 300 plus of them (although I took 500 plus photos). That’s the time I discover my finger operating the release button can only take so much pain. That is why photographers get mad when some people use their photos without credit. The pain is yours (not forgetting the trouble of getting there or just being there) but the reward others take the recognition. As for myself I just like sharing things and anyone can use my materials in my blog provided they do not use it for mischief or anything against the law.
As I mentioned earlier one has to be very fast in adjusting to the lighting conditions during the event. The background screen, the surrounding lights and even your competing cameramen in the room who wants to get the best angle of shot.
One thing that everyone enjoyed during the dinner was the appearance by the famous comedian Joanne Kam. Again this is my first experience with her. The jokes were mostly related to ladies and things you would not want your young daughter to say. I mean she can get away with it but it was all for fun and entertainment. If I say what she said last night I swear that my wife will never speak to me ever again.
Anyway the show was all good for me. It brings me away from the regular official event of lengthy speeches and things to do with national aspirations. Sometimes people may see the organisation part is pretty important. No doubt it is. But I also see the outcome will always be how much effort has been put into it and not necessary the dollars and cents. This is so because I happened to meet the backstage team who put this all together. The models also play an important as all eyes will be on you when you walk down the catwalk. Any mistake you make or if you take a tumble or your expression betrays the confidence it will affect the whole show. Strut with style and you will have the audience rooting for you even if you make a mistake.
Anyway there is nothing much I can share with you on how to improve your photography skills when attending a fashion show. You can bring your Nikon or Canon camera or various types of lenses and flash guns. But some people need not worry about what equipment they need to bring along to a fashion show but just sit down to enjoy the food, music and company. These are the kind of people you have to salute and usually makes you green with envy.
